KAREN P. SWANSON
received her Master of Architecture degree with honors from the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1989 and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan in 1980. She began her professional career with the Chicago firms of Loebl, Schlossman and Hackl, Environ Architects, and the world-renowned firm of Tigerman, McCurry Architects. In 1989 she relocated to Michigan and worked with Luckenbach Ziegelman and Partners. In 1992 she left the firm to form a partnership with her father, Robert Saarinen Swanson, marking the fourth generation of an architectural practice begun with the internationally known Eliel Saarinen. Karen also served as adjunct professor of design at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture.

Ms. Swanson received two AIA Honor Awards design from the Detroit Chapter, one for a unique mixed use project and a second for a progressive corporate office project. She is a member of the American Institute of Architects, and is currently assisting in the research for a publication regarding the work of her grandmother, Pipsan Saarinen Swanson. Past affiliations include: Metropolitan Children’s Museum Board Member; University of Michigan Alumni Society Board of Governors; Furniture Resource Center Chair Affair Benefit participant; Public Relations Task Force member for the Michigan Society of Architects; Detroit Chapter AIA Honor Awards chair; Cranbrook Art Academys’ Art and Antique Auction committee member and Collision in Cool committee member; AIA Michigan Design Retreat participant; Artists Market Dollhouse benefit auction participant; Her work has been featured in “Contract Magazine”, “Hour Detroit” and the Detroit and Ann Arbor News.

 


GLENDA L. MEADS
received degrees in both Architecture and Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo in August 1988. She participated in the Rome Study Program and interned with the internationally renowned firm of Arthur Erikson Architects in Toronto. She came to Michigan in 1989 and worked for Victor Saroki and Associates until 1992 when she formed Studio Pellegrina, a sole architectural practice and served as adjunct professor of design at University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture.

In 2000 Glenda received the AIA Detroit Young Architect of the Year award for overall excellence in the field of Architecture. She has also been recognized with an AIA Michigan Honor Award for the Townsend Park Town homes in Birmingham, Michigan. Her previous practice, Studio Pellegrina, received a Historic Preservation Award for the Eli Wooster Landmark Home built in 1876. She is a member of the American Institute of Architects and a board member of the Birmingham Historical Society.

Past affiliations include: AIA House Tour Committee member and chair; City of Birmingham Historic District and Design Review Commissioner; AIA Public Awareness Committee Member; AIA Women in Architecture Committee member; Furniture Resource Center Chair Affair Benefit participant; AIA Michigan Design Retreat Participant. Her work has been featured in “Young Architects/Planners and Their Clients”, AIA National Forum “Rebuilding Downtown”, “Hour Detroit” and “Style” Magazines.



ROBERT SAARINEN SWANSON
has over 50 years of experience highlighted by numerous design and AIA Honor Awards and a broad spectrum of project types.  He began his professional career with the firm of Saarinen, Swanson, Saarinen Architects in Bloomfield Hills.  Later, in association with his father he became president of Swanson Associates, Inc. Architects, Engineers & Planners.  He simultaneously formed a satellite office, Swanson/ Hofland in Harbor Springs, Michigan, specializing in resort design and planning.  In 1977, he established Robert Saarinen Swanson Architect as sole practitioner, later partnering with Karen P. Swanson AIA.

Special project include Cranbrook Academy of Art Lecture Hall, Bloomfield Hills; Lone Pine/Bloomfield Hills Office Center, Bloomfield Hills; several projects at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, including the Art and Architecture building; Kresge Library, Oakland University; L'Arbre Croche Development, Harbor Springs; Hills of Line Pine Development, Bloomfield Hills, D'Arcy, McManus & Masius Office Building, Bloomfield Hills; Residences in Hawaii, Eleuthera, Harbor Springs, Ann Arbor, East Lansing and Bloomfield Hills.

Mr. Swanson is a member of the American Institute of Architects and has served on the Board of Governors for Cranbrook Art Academy since 1971.  He has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Birmingham since 1955.  He has served on several committees for the Detroit Chapter AIA and Michigan Society of Architects.

Mr. Swanson received his Bachelor of Architecture from The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and his Master of Architecture from M.I.T. in Cambridge
